The benefits of organic food by Marine of Attitude Organics

Attitude Organic (http://attitudeorganic.com/)   recently realized that wherever we go shopping, always more organic food is available and that the benefits of organic food are very popular in the media. Nevertheless, somehow, we still tend to have a very blurred idea of what it is and of its advantages. Read the article below if you want a clear overview on the subject!

What is organic food?

You have probably heard that organic food is healthier for you and higher quality but try not to become an easy marketing target and make sure that you understand what you buy.

So, what is organic food? Organic food is food that has been grown and processed in an organic manner. To obtain this “organic” label the farmer needs to fill strict criteria and follow a severe regulation.

The rules vary from one country to another (otherwise it would be too easy, right?) but the basics concepts are similar. To be called organic, food must be grown:

  • with a restricted use of fertilizers and pesticides

  • with a special attention to animal welfare (if we talk about meat or eggs)

  • in a way that respect the soil health (Compost, crop rotation…)

  • with a very low quantity of additives

  • with no GMOs.

Now that you know what organic food is, it is normal to wonder: “Is organic food better?” Attitude Organic tries to give you an answer below.

Is organic food better for you?

When we ask here: “Is organic food better for you?” we mean for your health and we ask the question because it is argued within the scientists’ community. The truth is, there is no study driven on the long-term effects of eating organic food. Indeed, the subject is still too new and fresh. However, there are a few arguments that are undeniable and support the idea that you should try to go for it as much as possible.

Organic food is less toxic

At first, in non-organic farms, animals are treated with antibiotics that you will find in your plate and could cause food sickness in some cases.

Moreover, all the chemicals and hormones given to the animals to make them grow fat quicker remains within the meat. You then consume them without realizing it and the same goes for the fruits and vegetables.

Some scientists claim that organic pesticides are as harmful as synthetic ones. But as specified, no long term studies prove it, so at equal risk, we should go for the natural option.

Organic food contains slightly more nutrients

Some scientists agree to say that organic food contains much more nutrient and antioxidant. According to the guardian: “Switching to organic fruit and vegetables could give the same benefits as adding one or two portions of the recommended "five a day".”

Other specialist who drove studies in 2012 (https://www.zmescience.com/other/science-abc/organic-food-science02092015/) alleges that the health benefits between organic vs. non organic is not meaningful. Indeed people who eat organic present slightly higher level of antioxidant and phosphorus, as well as Omega-3 fatty acid. At Attitude Organic, we tend to think that even if the benefit is slight, it worth it.

Organic food tastes better

The benefits of organic food are not only for your health but also for your own pleasure. It has been proven that the higher level of antioxidant in organic products enhances the taste.

What are the benefits of organic food for the environment?

The advantages of organic food for the environment, like for your health, are arguable. Organic farming, which does not use any chemicals and pesticides is supposed to reduce water pollution, results in richer soils and reduces their erosion. Some scientists are against this theory and claim that natural pesticides are as dangerous as the synthetic ones because they are the same substances. That said, we still prefer a natural version if we do not risk more.

Another point is that “organic farming used 50 percent less energy than conventional farming methods” and there is no doubt about that. The counter argument used by organic food opponents is that it uses much more land (than classic farming) to produce as much and then pollute more. The thing they forget when they call this argument is that people who consume organic are very often conscious of the quantity they buy and try to avoid waste. We believe that it is not necessary to remind you how many pounds of food are wasted every year. Therefore, if a consumer consumes more wisely, organic and pay attention to not wasting, the problem does not exist anymore.

So from our point of view and from the nonexistence of real data (the counter arguments remain supposition) organic food is more environment friendly that its non-organic counterpart.

What are the benefits of organic food for Animals?

To end up this article on a strong note, Attitude Organic wanted to give you the only fact that everyone agree on: organic farming is better for animals. If you are not a vegetarian, going for meat coming from organic farming could be a way to be more ethical. The life conditions of animals in organic farms are extremely better. Animals are treated as humanly as possible in those structures.

As you can see, the benefits of organic food is a sensitive subject. Because of all the current greenwashing and healthy trends, some people might have some doubts about it. It is also fair to question it and too early to draw scientific conclusions. However, one thing is 200% sure, the current situation cannot be worst. Even if the health benefits are small (which is still good to take), the advantages regarding the environment (combined with a zero waste movement) and the animal welfare should be enough to convince you. We hope you found this article interesting and that it helps you to understand the subject better.
